French Toast with Easy Breakfast Toppings

August 25, 2021 (Last Updated: August 19, 2021)

French toast tastes way too good for the short amount of time it takes to make!

In well under 10 minutes you will be feasting on this great breakfast option.

Personally, I think that the best part of the french toast is the pile of delicious toppings on top.

That’s why I’ve included a whole section with my favourite sweet breakfast toppings. And if you aren’t into sweet stuff, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered too!

How to Make the French Toast

So, you want to know how to make this wonderful dish? There really isn’t much to it, and that’s a good thing!

In a wide bowl, mix the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and salt well with a fork. No need to dirty a whisk unnecessarily!

Now, melt the butter in a pan over medium-low heat. You want a pan that can fit both slices of bread in it at the same time – unless, of course, you do them one at a time.

Soak your first bread slice in about half the egg mixture and place it into the hot pan. Soak the other slice in the remaining egg mixture and add it to the pan. If there is any leftover egg mixture, pour it over the bread.

Cook the bread for a couple of minutes on each side, until browned (or however you like it).

That’s all there is to this simple (and yummy) dish. And that’s with it explained in excruciating detail…or do you want me to add details on how you should cut the bread?

Sweet Breakfast Toppings for the French Toast

Now, for the best part!

To be honest, I think that my favourite thing about this french was what went on top of it.

I think that with these delicious toppings I’d even be able to down a slice of that dodgy chocolate bread (that was meant to be cake) that my brother made a few years back!

Banana & Nut Butter

If you’ve never tried banana and nut butter, GO DO IT RIGHT NOW!! It’s amazing.

This french toast topping is the slightly ramped up version of this glorious combo.

Start by spreading honey over the hot french toast. Cover that with some banana slices. Drizzle some nut butter over the banana (or spread it over the honey before adding the banana).

Finish it off with some chopped nuts and cinnamon (because cinnamon in the egg mixture just isn’t enough!)

If you’re feeling decadent, you may even want to add some chocolate chips to the topping tower!

Cottage Cheese & Berries

This is another great combo that admittedly sounds a bit weird.

First spread a good layer of smooth cottage cheese over the hot french toast. If you don’t have cottage cheese I’m sure cream cheese would do the trick. You could even try some harder cheeses, but I’m not making any guarantees with that!

Next, add a layer of berry jam, then top off your yummy brekkie with a good sprinkling of fresh berries (I used blueberries).

These two topping ideas are also great just to have on toast. Whatever floats your boat!

Savoury

If you don’t have a big sweet tooth, then you’re a bit strange – but I do have some savoury topping ideas for you!

First of all, I’d leave the cinnamon out of the french toast mixture because it’s a sweet-ish spice.

As for the toppings, you could try out a ‘fry-up breakfast’ inspired topping: some bacon, baked beans, tomatoes, and mushrooms.

Personally, I’d do something with cheese, ham, and maybe some avocado and herbs. That sounds delicious!

Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, this french toast recipe is for you!

Notes

*You could leave out the cinnamon and make savoury french toast instead. For the toppings, you could try out a ‘fry-up breakfast’ inspired topping: some bacon, baked beans, tomatoes, and mushrooms. Otherwise, I’d do something with cheese, ham, and maybe some avocado and herbs.

These buttermilk pancakes are a great breakfast option for when you have a little more time on your hands.
